Celebrating Traditional Field Gates

The Heritage Office of Kilkenny County Council commissioned a project to record traditional fieldgates in Co. Kilkenny and raise awareness about this important part of our rural heritage. These traditional fieldgates were forged by blacksmiths in times past. They are functional and beautiful pieces of craft which are disappearing from our rural landscape. The project, undertaken by Shem Caulfield, and overseen by a sub-committee of the Kilkenny Heritage Forum produced the following:

• Photographic survey and condition report of approx 200 field gates in the Thomastown, Inistioge, Graiguenamanagh and wider Castlecomer areas

• Resources for primary schools to teach about traditional fieldgates 2 short films on the value of traditional fieldgates and advice on their care

The Heritage Office of Kilkenny County Council held an event on Sunday 12th October, 2014 celebrating our traditional farm gates, at Castlecomer Discovery Park.
