South Eastern Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Study Public Open Evening 16th Nov

PRESS RELEASE 11th November 2011

South Eastern Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Study Public Open Evening
The Office of Public Works (OPW) invites members of the public to a Public Open Evening on Wednesday 16th November 2011 at Hotel Kilkenny, College Road, Kilkenny, from 6pm until 9pm in relation to the South Eastern CFRAM Study.
The overall aims of the South Eastern CFRAM Study, which was commissioned in July 2011, are the assessment and sustainable management of flood risk in the South Eastern district. The study is part of a CFRAM programme being undertaken by the OPW in line with current national flood policy and the EU Directive on the Assessment and Management of Flood Risk. The programme requires that CFRAM studies be completed by the end of 2015.
The South Eastern district is one of the largest districts covering about one fifth of the country with an area of nearly 13,000km2. It includes all of counties Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford, large portions of counties Laois, Waterford, Tipperary, Kildare, Wicklow and Offaly as well as small portions of Cork and Limerick. The study area contains Waterford City and a number of other large towns. However, much of the district is rural and agricultural in nature.
The main rivers in the district are the Slaney, Barrow, Nore and Suir. A CFRAM Study for the Suir catchment is also being undertaken by the OPW, the outputs from which will be coordinated with the South Eastern CFRAM Study.
The South Eastern CFRAM Study will examine all options to reduce flood risk, including both structural and non-structural measures, and will also consider related environmental issues. There will be full consultation with individuals and organisations with an interest in flooding and related issues.
Pending the completion of the study, the OPW will continue to work with the Local Authorities to identify and implement interim small-scale flood mitigation works in areas at risk from flooding.
The Public Open Evening is open to anybody who would like to learn more or share their views and experiences in relation to flooding, flood risk and environmental considerations. Members of the South Eastern CFRAM Study team will be available to answer questions and to discuss the study.
