LIGHTS OUT! a brand new National Film Festival for Young People takes place in Kilkenny from 22nd - 25th July 2008.
An initiative of the IFI, and in partnership with Kilkenny County Council Arts Office and Young Irish Film Makers, all involved wish to promote film culture. LIGHTS OUT! aims to provide young audiences with access to the best films from Ireland and around the world with a diverse programme of animation, live action, documentary and short films.
As well as screening an eclectic range of interesting films that you might not expect to see in your local multiplex, LIGHTS OUT! will also screen a short film inspired by some of the themes and images from the Lights Out! programme, created by talented young Kilkenny amateurs who participated in a Lights Out! / Young Irish Film Makers Workshop.
LIGHTS OUT! is for young people who love cinema and who love to see more.

3epkano - Live music accompaniment to classic 1920's films
Returning to Kilkenny following their sell-out performances in 2004, 2005 and 2006, eclectic music ensemble 3epkano presented live music accompaniment to films from the 1920's period at Ryan's, Friary Street, in December 2006 with support from Dublin group The Ruby Tailights and local group A Safe Dry Place.
3epkano, a Dublin based, eight piece band/ensemble that specialise in producing original and innovative soundtracks for films from the silent movie era was formed in early 2004 by Matthew Nolan and Cameron Doyle.
Creating music for 3epkano is a process of patient exploration and tentative discovery. The work that results is an admission of what we don't know and might never be able to understand. It is not about moving from confusion to clarity - getting lost is the goal - being forced to break your old habits and understandings, giving up your old forms of complacency. For 3epkano, genuine musical performance is about not-knowing. The result is music of genuine discovery.

Allowing yourself to let go, to lose control, is central to our conception of music - there is no singular purpose, meaning, or point to prove. There is only exploring and moving on, with no end to the process of experiencing, and no goal to reach.
In the modernist high tide of l920s experimental filmmaking, a series of films were made which offer us a powerful demonstration that the cinema went farther in its great silent decade than most filmmakers today could ever imagine. 3EPKANO will provide live musical accompaniment to such films from this period as:
- Anémic Cinéma by Marcel Duchamp
- Ballet Mécanique by Fernand Léger
- Rhythmus 21 and Ghosts Before Breakfast(Vormittagsspuk) by Hans Richter
- Starfish (L'Etoile de la Mer) by Man Ray
- clips from work by Norman McClaren, Caroline Leaf and Piotr Sadowski'
3epkano group are Matthew Nolan- electric guitar, Cameron Doyle-electric guitar, Karen Dervan viola, Lioba Petrie cello, Richard McCullough keyboards, James Macken drums, David Gough bass guitar and Neil O'Connor vibraphone.
'The imagination and insight brought to silent film by 3epkano makes their shows an unmissable visual and aural experience' Film Ireland Online.
Dublin band The Ruby Tailights will kicked off with fresh and edgy chimes that define The Ruby Tailights as makers of beautiful, enigmatic, melancholy and uplifting sounds.
The combination of such gorgeous melodies, restrained production, soulful lyrics and unique vocals are an extremely potent weapon. They point you towards the sublime and then leave you dangling, ready to start the process all over again.
"The Ruby Tailights have all the qualities of my favourite bands wrapped up in one. They can remind you of the Pixies, a bit of Pavement and some Guided by Voices all at the same time" Alison Curtis, Today FM.
After a modest number of successful gigs in Kilkenny and Dublin local group A Safe Dry Place comprising of Neil Quigley (guitar), Steven Morton (drums), Niall O' Regan (piano, bass) and Evan Ryan (trumpet) have developed their own brand of instrumental music, creating textured and layered sounds, using a computer as their canvas. This sound has now matured as the band began to encompass different styles and sounds, with the addition of a variety of new instruments.
