In accordance with the new waste policy, the waste management regions of Ireland were reformed in 2013 and now County Kilkenny is part of the Southern Waste Managment Region.
Southern Waste Management Plan
The Waste Management Plan for the Southern Waste Region was launched in May 2015 and is available to view on www.southernwasteregion.ie.
Prevention and Reuse
Waste prevention is the most preferred waste management option and central to achieving a more resource efficient society. By preventing waste from being generated, the need to handle, transport, treat and dispose of waste is eliminated, resulting in both environmental and economic savings. As part of the promotion to highlight waste prevention, the Council has produced a local repair directory promoting local repair services.
There are ten repair categories including musical instruments repairs, garden equipment repairs and clothes alterations. The aim of the Repair Directory is to make it easier for people to consider repair as an option to extend the life cycle of an item rather than just throwing it away. Extending the life cycle of products helps to reduce waste which is an objective of the recently adopted Southern Waste Region Waste Management Plan. The 2nd edition of the Repair Directory is available to download here.
