The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge Starts Soon in All Kilkenny Library Service Branches

Summer Reading Challenge 2018

Are you ready for a Magical Summer of Reading?

The Summer Stars Reading Challenge will run from 19th June, 2018 until 31st August, 2018 in all our libraries in Kilkenny. Children are invited to register and are will be given a reading card to record and track their own progress. The challenge aimed at children from 4 years and up is to read 8 or more books over the summer. There will be rewards and incentives along the way books in total with a grand finale event at the end for all participants.

"Once again this summer we are excited to inspire children everywhere to keep reading while school is out and enjoy reading for pleasure while on holidays" comments County librarian, Josephine Coyne. " A love of reading can open up a world of possibilities for children and our staff look forward to working with families throughout County Kilkenny this summer to offer fun and educational activities that encourage children to read and participate in their community" she says.

Every year has seen an increase in the amount of children completing this challenge and last year was no different with 1017 children receiving a certificate of completion and 2000 children attending events over the summer.

International research has shown that reading ability can fall behind during the summer and that these reading challenges help strengthen literacy skills. When children read during the summer, it helps them build reading skills and prevent summer learning loss.

The challenge is fun and it's free.
